Our Issues, Our Voices: Communities of Color Advocating for Health - 2008
The workshops were held at the following locations:
- February 27, 2008 - Fresno at UC Center, 550 East Shaw Avenue, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm (registration begins at 9:30 am)
- May 01, 2008 - San Diego at Tubman Chavez Multicultural Center, 415 North Euclid Avenue, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm (registration begins at 8:30 am)

Please join CPEHN for an interactive workshop focusing on teaching participants how to effectively frame and communicate messages around key health issues to help you become a more effective health advocate (event flyer)!
• Dhaya Lakshminarayanan, Chief Humorist and Communication Specialist with Allegory, a training company (www.allegorytraining.com) will provide proven skills and techniques for learning how to Communicate to be Heard and Remembered™
• Participants will then move into facilitated breakout sessions, allowing them to discuss public health issues that can be challenging to talk about (see location-specific small groups topics below).
• Participants will then apply the information from the small group discussion to practice their new public speaking skills.

Small group topics at the
- farmworkers, focusing on their contributions and dispelling misinformation.
- Reframing the obesity epidemic from an issue of individual responsibility to one of social and environmental conditions.
- Making the connection between air quality and health disparities.
Small group topics at the
- Cost effectiveness and health benefits of preventive care and early screening practices.
- Conveying the benefits for increased bi-national cooperation and collaboration along the California/Mexico border.
- Using an opportunity frame to advocate for universal access to health care.
Cost: $25 General Public/$10 for CPEHN Network Members.
