CPEHN issued the following statement after today’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States regarding the ‘public charge’ rule that targets low-income immigrant families.

“We are deeply disappointed in today’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court to temporarily set aside the preliminary injunctions that prevented DHS’ ‘public charge’ rule from going into effect. While the regulation directly impacts only a small number of people, in California, otherwise eligible immigrant families are already going hungry and people are avoiding needed medical care because of the public charge rule. This change will exacerbate sickness, poverty and hunger, widen health, racial and economic disparities, and divide families and communities.

“The fight to protect the right of all families to thrive isn’t over! CPEHN and our partners in the Protecting Immigrant Families (PIF) campaign will continue to organize community action against the Administration’s public charge rule and protect our immigrant families from unjust policies. In the meantime, we encourage all concerned to check out the “Know Your Rights” resources below.”
