Many Walkers in LA’s Chinatown; In Chino? Not so Much; Finding Health Statistics by ZIP Code, City, and Legislative District

By Dr. Ninez Ponce, Principal Investigator, California Health Interview Survey; CPEHN Board Member

Californians can now easily access comprehensive health statistics by ZIP code, city, and legislative district thanks to a new web tool from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. The free, easy-to-use AskCHIS Neighborhood Edition (AskCHIS NE), which launched in mid-November 2014 at askchisne.ucla.edu, lets you customize and compare information for small geographic areas, and map and chart your results.

“So far, the most popular searches have been related to diabetes, obesity, and insurance,” said Bogdan Rau, project coordinator for AskCHIS NE. “And the visuals that users are downloading through AskCHIS NE – which can be included in reports, grants, and studies – really help tell the story.”

AskCHIS NE covers a wide range of health topics, including health insurance, chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes, health behaviors like smoking and physical activity, children’s health, access to care, mental health, and much more.

The new tool is a service of the Center’s California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), the nation’s largest state health survey. A companion web tool, AskCHIS, allows users to find health data at the county, region, and state level.

If you’re ready to jump in, check out a recorded webinar on how to use AskCHIS NE, read a Q&A with Bogdan Rau about the tool, or start your own search at AskCHIS NE.

We are also hosting a series of free trainings on AskCHIS NE. The upcoming schedule includes both online and in-person workshops:
