President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”

On July 4th, 2025, President Trump signed H.R. 1 into law, which makes significant cuts to the Medicaid program (California’s Medi-Cal). An estimated 3.5 million Californians will lose access to Medi-Cal because of H.R. 1, and immigrants will be overrepresented among the newly uninsured. The new law additionally puts $30 billion in federal funding for California’s hospitals and health systems at risk annually and will cause major disruptions for individuals including seniors, children, and people with disabilities relying on California’s safety-net programs.

Additional Federal Changes

H.R.1 is not the only attack on health care coverage. President Trump and Republican policymakers are continuing their attacks, issuing federal notices threatening to impose additional restrictions on access to safety-net programs and enacting regulatory changes that will make health care coverage much less affordable for the 1.6 million Californians who purchase insurance through Covered California, the state’s insurance marketplace. Taken together these policies will increase medical debt, threaten our economic security and harm our health.

The Fight for our Health is Far From Over!

All 9 of California’s Republican Congressional members who voted for H.R. 1 chose tax breaks for big corporations over health care for people fighting cancer, seniors in nursing homes, children, people with disabilities, veterans and those seeking reproductive care. This includes Representatives like David Valadao who represents a district where  nearly two-thirds of people receive Medicaid. It is up to us to hold our leaders accountable for their vote to take health care away from Californians.
